Builder-in-Residence
At Genesis, we help build amazing companies. We back founders with the support, connections, and expertise they need to grow.
Genesis is hiring its first Builder-in-Residence - a new, experimental role designed to answer a simple question: what happens when a startup incubator has a dedicated builder on staff? You'll work directly with the CEO to build tools, automate workflows, and create applications that make Genesis sharper, faster, and more effective. You'll also be a resource for the founders and teams in our programs - helping them prototype ideas, navigate the AI tooling landscape, and move from concept to working product more quickly.
This isn't a traditional developer role. You won't be writing enterprise software from scratch. You'll be using the latest AI-powered building tools - Lovable, Bolt.new, v0, Claude Code, Cursor, and whatever emerges next - to ship things fast and solve real problems. The right person for this role is someone who is already deep in this world, building things constantly, and genuinely excited about what these tools make possible. This will be a full-time, 6 month contract with potential for extension.
What You'll Do
- Build internal tools and dashboards that improve how Genesis operates - from tracking portfolio companies to streamlining program delivery.
- Design and implement automations that eliminate manual work and free up the team to focus on higher-value activities.
- Empower non-technical founders to build. Work directly with founders in the Genesis ecosystem to train them on AI-powered development tools so they can prototype and validate their own ideas - reducing their dependence on outside development resources.
- Train and upskill Genesis staff on AI-powered tools, helping the broader team become more capable and self-sufficient builders.
- Support founders and startup teams as a hands-on technical resource - advising on tooling decisions and unblocking technical challenges.
- Stay on the frontier of AI, LLMs, and no-code/low-code tooling, and bring what you learn back to Genesis. You'll be our resident expert on what's new, what works, and what's hype.
Who You Are
- You are a builder first. You have a portfolio of things you've made - side projects, tools, prototypes, apps - and you can show them to us.
- You have strong proficiency with AI-powered development tools like Lovable, Bolt.new, v0, Claude Code, Cursor, or similar platforms. You don't just know they exist - you use them regularly and have opinions about them.
- You are deeply curious about AI and LLMs. You follow the space closely, experiment with new tools and models as they emerge, and can explain what matters and what doesn't.
- You are entrepreneurial by nature. You thrive with autonomy, move fast, and are comfortable defining your own priorities within a broad mandate.
- You communicate clearly and can translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences. A big part of this role is teaching and supporting others.
- You are comfortable with ambiguity. This is a new role. There's no playbook. You'll help write it.
Nice to Have
- A background or education in software development, computer science, or a related field.
Why This Role
You'll be standing at the intersection of two of the most exciting things happening right now: the AI tooling revolution and early-stage startups. That's not a metaphor - it's your actual day job.
You'll work directly with the CEO, have real influence over how an incubator operates, and get a front-row seat to Newfoundland & Labrador's most promising emerging startups as they take shape. You'll know what's being built before anyone else does.
You'll also be pushing the boundaries of what's possible with AI-powered tools every single day - not in theory, but by shipping real things for real people.
If the experiment works - and we think it will - there's a path to making this a permanent part of the Genesis team. And even if you move on after six months, you'll leave with a portfolio, a network, and a skillset that puts you ahead of almost anyone in the room.
